CANACONA: In a proactive step towards environmental cleanliness, the Canacona Municipal Council conducted a garbage collection drive at the merchant shops of Chaudi on World Environment Day, Thursday. The initiative aimed to promote awareness about waste management and maintain cleanliness in the municipal area.
Different types of waste were collected from various business establishments as part of the campaign. Several key municipal officials and councilors, including Ramakant Naik Gaunkar, Hemant Naik Gaunkar, Narsisco (Nadin) Fernandes, Neetu Desai, Municipal Inspector Yeso Desai, and Municipal Supervisor Kanya Desai, actively participated in the effort.
During the event, the municipal officers and staff took the pledge of Swachh Bharat, Green India in the presence of Chief Officer Laxmikant Desai. The collected garbage bags were displayed as a symbolic reminder of the community’s commitment to a cleaner environment.
Speaking on the occasion, Chaudi Ward councilor Ramakant Naik Gaunkar appealed to local traders to encourage the use of cloth bags. He urged shopkeepers to provide cloth bags to their customers or request customers visiting the main market to bring their own reusable bags, thereby reducing plastic waste.
This campaign reflects the municipality’s continued dedication to environmental protection and sustainable practices in the region.
