CANCONA: In a move to encourage environmental sustainability and cultural awareness among students, the Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) distributed fruit-bearing and medicinal plants to school children during a commemorative event held at the Martyrs’ Memorial, Chaudi, on Wednesday.
The initiative, launched in the presence of Goa Legislative Assembly Speaker and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar, aimed at instilling ecological values while also reinforcing the importance of preserving Goa’s cultural heritage.
“By engaging students in planting fruit trees and medicinal herbs, we are sowing seeds of responsibility and self-reliance for the future,” said CMC Chairperson Sara Shambha Naik Desai. She emphasized the need to protect Goan traditions and warned against the growing tilt of today’s youth toward Western lifestyles. “We must guide our next generation to stay rooted in our heritage,” she stated.
Speaker Ramesh Tawadkar echoed the sentiment, stating that such community-led initiatives help build a deeper connection between young minds, their environment, and their history. “Patriotism isn’t just about remembering the past—it’s also about shaping a responsible future,” he remarked.
The tree distribution drive was conducted as part of a larger public awareness initiative by the CMC, tying together themes of history, culture, and sustainability. The event saw participation from local leaders, teachers, students, and residents.
