CANACONA: In a delayed move that has raised eyebrows among residents, Canacona police have registered an FIR 11 days after six unidentified men attempted a dacoity at a jewellery shop in Chaudi.
According to police, an FIR under Sections 312 and 132 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) 2023 has been filed vide Canacona PS Crime No. 73/2025 against six unknown accused who allegedly attempted to rob S M Jewellery, Chaudi Market, around 2:30 am on November 25, 2025.
The case has been filed based on a complaint by Constable Yeshwant Gad Desai of Canacona Police Station.
Police stated that the group of six, armed with deadly weapons and with a common intention to commit theft, abandoned their plan after the arrival of police personnel. The FIR also notes that the accused allegedly pelted stones at police, obstructing them from performing their duty, before fleeing into nearby bushes.
The crime was formally registered between 5 pm on December 5 and 5 pm on December 6, with further investigation handed over to PSI Ajit Velip.
Meanwhile, locals have criticised the police for failing to nab the accused despite them fleeing “within catchable distance.” Residents questioned the delay in filing the FIR and expressed dissatisfaction over the inability of police to track the suspects even after reportedly searching nearby transport hubs such as the bus stand and railway station.
Police maintain that investigation and search operations to trace the six culprits are ongoing.
