MARGAO: Canacona Sports and Cultural Club blank Curtorim Gymkhana 2-0 to enter into the quarterfinals of the 7th Martin’s Cup organised by Betalbatim Sports Club and played at panchayat ground Betalbatim on Wednesday.
It was a contest of supremacy and from the word go both teams played an attacking brand of soccer and tried to penetrate into rival defence and were eager to get the name on the score sheet.
The wait was over in the 15th minute of Play when Canacona Sports and Cultural Club scored their first goal through Velvino Fernandes to take the lead Curtorim Gymkhana was eager to find an equaliser but Joywin Carneiro’s shoot from close range sail over the crossbar before the half time and scored board remained 1-0 in favour of Canacona.
As the match entered the second session Curtorim Gymkhana Nickson Castanah gave a through pass to Milagres Fernandes in the 35th minute of play but he couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity and Canacona’s defence cleared the ball for a corner. As the match progressed in the last quarter of the match Trence gave a long pass to Allric who ran down beat the defence and goalkeeper Johnson Bagot and placed the ball in the open net to make it 2-0.
In the last minutes of the game again Curtorim Gymkhana got the opportunity as a long ranger shoot well collected by Joywin Carneiro but failed to place in the net
Earl Fernandes goalkeeper of Canacona was awarded man of the match by Joe Cota.
