PANAJI: Lifestyle-related diseases are now killing more Goans than the infectious once.
According to the government report, in 2023, more than 47 per cent of the total deaths in the State were cased by Non-Communicable Diseases (NCD) such as heart attack, cancer and diabetes.
The Economic Survey 2024-25 tabled in the House also reveals males are more prone to NCD related deaths. Of the total 47 per cent deaths, male comprised of 54.46%.
The State has been undergoing rapid demographic changes during last few decades. Understanding the causes of death plays a vital role in improving public health policies and allocation of medical resources.
It also helps in identifying risk factors and develop preventive measures to improve quality of life.
It has been noticed that the natural deaths, particularly due to Heart diseases, Heart attacks, Cancer and Diabetes are most common causes of deaths in the State which accounts to 47.44% of the total deaths in the State of which 42.33% are males and 54.46% are females.
The Government is making significant strides in combating Tuberculosis through implementation of TB Mukt Goa initiative at grass root level which has ultimately resulted in only 1.25% of the deaths due to Tuberculosis during the year 2023.
6.15% of deaths occurred due to unnatural causes such as drowning, bites or strings of venomous animals, accidental burns, accidental poisoning, road accidents, suicide etc.
Infant Mortality Rate refers to number of deaths of children less than one year of age per thousand births in a given year.
The Infant Mortality Rate of Goa deteriorated in the year 2023, as the State recorded 10.73 infant deaths per thousand live births, as against the 8.83 infant deaths per thousand live births in the year 2022.
Maternal Mortality Rate refers to the deaths of women due to complications from pregnancy or child birth. There is a decrease in the MMR in the year 2023 as compared to year 2022.
The MMR of Goa during the year 2023 is 35 deaths per lakh live Births as compared to 58 deaths per lakh live Births during the year 2022.
