MARGAO: Candolim Sports Club edged out Sao Jose de Areal 4-2 via the tiebreaker to enter into the quarterfinals of the 51st Custodio memorial football tournament Org by Raia Sporting Club and played at Raia Panchayat ground.
The match started at on fast pace and within five minutes of play, Candolim wasted three one-to-one chances by Bhavesh Candolkar while Areal also couldn’t capitalise on the opportunity that came in their by Leo Gomendes and Cavin Soares and both teams remained on 0-0 draw at the half time.
After the resumption of the second half, both teams tried to control the game and make way to penetrate in rival defence. Candolim had many opportunities but their forwards failed to capitalize on their chances so also Areal Rayman Fernandes and Clifford Costa missed an open chance to score. In the dying minutes of the game, Sailesh had the golden opportunity to score but the Areal goalkeeper saved the one-to-one situation. In injury time Areal had a chance to scored the goal but Melvin Lobo’s shot sailed over the crossbar bar and referee David Rebello blew the final whistle to end the regular time of the game and made way to decide winners by way of a penalty shootout.
In the resultant tiebreaker, Candolim netted through Nikhil Naik, Aman Govekar Ashley Fernandes and Rajat Chopdekar while Areal Bresal Viegas and Tyson Carvalho found the net.
Krupesh Bandodkar goalkeeper of Candolim was awarded man of the match for his outstanding performance under the bar by Cynthia Fernandes.
