PANAJI: All students at government, aided, unaided, primary, secondary, higher secondary, and special schools are required to wear canvas shoes as part of their uniforms, according to a directive from the Directorate of Education.
Because leather and synthetic shoes are made using dangerous chemicals, the program seeks to lessen their negative effects on the environment.
Shailesh Zingde, the director of education, stated in a circular that “environmental protection must be practiced as much as it is preached.” There is no denying that leather has a significant negative impact on the environment. Extremely hazardous chemicals that could damage human skin are used in the manufacturing of animal leather.”
The same chemicals are used in the production of other shoes made of synthetic materials, such as leather. Wearing canvas shoes to school can drastically cut down on its use,” he stated.
“Canvas shoes are composed of environmentally benign materials, are more resilient to deterioration, are more comfortable, are reasonably priced, and—above all—do not endanger the environment or pupils. Canvas shoes can be worn for daily wear and are always recommended for athletic purposes,” he stated.
