Panaji: South Goa Member of Parliament Captain Viriato Fernandes launched a scathing attack on the Goa State Government, alleging large-scale financial mismanagement and governance failures while speaking during the discussion on the Union Budget in Parliament.
The MP urged the Central Government to order a comprehensive probe into what he described as multiple financial irregularities and alleged scams within the Goa administration. He warned that misgovernance and lack of fiscal discipline were pushing the state towards mounting debt and increasing crime.
Highlighting key issues affecting the state, Captain Fernandes criticised the continued practice of appointing teachers on temporary contracts instead of granting them permanent positions, stating that this had adversely impacted the education sector. He also raised concerns over coal transportation, the termination of the Bal Rath scheme and a reduction in budgetary allocation for education.
Drawing attention to the healthcare sector, the MP pointed to the acute shortage of doctors, support staff and essential medical equipment at the South Goa District Hospital, calling the situation alarming. He further slammed unplanned development and approvals granted to mega projects, alleging that such decisions were straining Goa’s water resources and basic infrastructure.
Captain Fernandes also objected to the imposition of tax on disability pensions and flagged delays in fund disbursement under the Ex-Servicemen Contributory Health Scheme (ECHS), stating that these issues were causing undue hardship to vulnerable sections.
Calling for immediate corrective steps, the South Goa MP said Goa’s interests must be protected through transparency, accountability and responsible financial governance.
