VASCO: In an interesting development, Captain Viriato Fernandes, State Convenor of the newly formed Goencho Avaaz Party, today announced his intentions to contest the upcoming Assembly 2022 elections from his home constituency of Dabolim.
An engineer by profession, Captain Viriato is an armed forces veteran who recently retired from the Indian navy. As an ex-military man, he has a strong sense of duty and a keen desire to do right by the people. Captain Viriato imbibed his acute sense of justice from his late mother, who instilled in her son the values of integrity, compassion, empathy and a strong love for Goa.
His unwavering commitment to his homeland propelled him to lead the fight to save Goa. In fact, his deep love for Goa triumphed over the temptation of a lucrative job offer on foreign shores. Instead, Captain Viriato chose to stay back in Goa and work for the state’s upliftment and betterment.
Elaborating on the announcement, Captain Viriato said: ‘’I never harboured any political ambitions. My goal was to address the various contentious issues plaguing my motherland. However, the wholesale destruction of Goa, specially in Dabolim which incidentally happens to be the gateway to Goa from across the globe and presently reeling under severe destruction due to greed of political leaders, has motivated me to throw my hat in the political arena. My objective in this endeavour is to make a positive change in partnership with the people. I am also hopeful that together we can usher in an era of clean politics in Goa.’’
