New Delhi: Ahead of the 19th season of the Indian Premier League, tournament officials are set to discuss several playing regulations during a captains meeting scheduled in Mumbai. The meeting, to be held just days before the start of the new season, will address multiple rule related matters including ball replacement procedures, innings timing and other playing conditions.
Among the key issues expected to draw attention is the revised rule concerning ball changes during matches, particularly in situations involving wet conditions. Captains will have only a limited role in requesting a ball replacement under the updated guidelines.
During the meeting, match officials and umpires will explain the procedures to team captains and clarify how the rules will be applied during matches. The discussion will also cover topics such as the two bouncer rule, bat inspections, the use of saliva on the ball and the retired out provision.
Under the current playing conditions, if a ball is lost, damaged or becomes unsuitable for play because of normal wear, the on field umpires will replace it with another ball showing a similar level of wear. Both the batter and the fielding captain will be informed when such a change is made.
In evening matches, the team bowling second will be allowed to request a one time ball change after the completion of the tenth over. The request must be made by the captain and only at the end of an over. However, the replacement will still be carried out by the umpires, who will provide a ball with comparable wear.
If the ball is replaced earlier in the innings due to it becoming wet, lost or damaged, the fielding captain will still retain the option to request a change after the tenth over. Beyond that stage, any additional request for a ball change will depend entirely on the decision of the umpires.
The rule changes are aimed at maintaining fair playing conditions while ensuring that the final decision on ball replacement remains under the authority of the match officials.
