OLD GOA: The Carambolim Comunidade has taken a firm stand against the recently enacted Bill that seeks to regularise illegal constructions on Comunidade land, becoming the first to officially oppose the legislation. During a meeting held in Panaji on Sunday, the Comunidade’s president, Venzy Viegas, called upon other comunidades to join in opposing the Bill.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Viegas condemned the government’s method of passing the Bill, labeling it illegal. He asserted that the government has no right to interfere in Comunidade affairs and urged all comunidades to reject the new law.
He further explained that the existing Comunidade Code already provides a clear procedure for regularising structures. However, the Bill allows the Administrator to approve regularisation without the Comunidade’s consent, effectively bypassing their authority—a move Viegas declared unacceptable.
Emphasizing the longstanding cooperation of the Comunidade in providing land to both Goans and the government whenever needed, Viegas questioned the necessity of such a Bill. The resolution opposing the Bill will now be forwarded to the Administrator of Comunidades and the Revenue Minister.
The meeting witnessed significant participation, with members unanimously supporting the resolution through a show of hands.
