PATTO: Residents of Carambolim, led by local activist Viresh Borkar, were stopped by police at the Town and Country Planning (TCP) office while protesting against a proposed mega construction project in their village.
The protestors are opposing a development plan that includes 84 residential flats, 46 commercial shops, and a swimming pool. Villagers claim that such a large-scale project would place immense pressure on Carambolim’s already strained infrastructure, including roads, water supply, and other civic amenities.
As part of their protest, the residents marched to the TCP office seeking clarity and action from the authorities. While officials offered to hold discussions with five representatives of the protest group, the villagers rejected the proposal, insisting that all protestors should be present to hear the officials’ response to the project they have been opposing.
Following the refusal, the residents staged a sit-in protest at the entrance of the TCP office, demanding that their concerns be addressed in a transparent manner. The protest continued as locals reiterated their demand for the authorities to reconsider approval for the project, citing potential long-term consequences for the village.
