PANAJI: Traditional fishermen from Caranzalem have urged the government to consult them before approving new water sports activities in their fishing zones, voicing fears that such ventures could disrupt their livelihood.
A delegation of Ramponkars met Fisheries Director Sharmila Monteiro and submitted a memorandum outlining their concerns about the potential impact of proposed recreational activities on their traditional fishing areas.
Responding to their representation, Director Monteiro assured that the department would carefully review their grievances and that no decisions would be taken without considering their inputs.
She lauded the Ramponkars as the “eyes and ears” of the government, highlighting their crucial role in safeguarding coastal resources and assisting in marine monitoring.
Monteiro also promised that the department would continue to seek their advice and participation not only on water sports proposals but on all matters affecting the fishing sector and coastal development.
The meeting ended on an optimistic note, underscoring efforts to enhance coordination and mutual trust between the fishing community and government authorities in managing Goa’s coastal economy.
