PANAJI: The state government led by Dr Pramod Sawant today granted another extension for the state’s offshore casinos to remain on the Mandovi River.
CM Sawant was addressing the media after chairing the cabinet meeting.
This comes as the latest addition to a series of extensions in recent years as the government continues to debate moving the casinos onshore.
“State cabinet has granted final extension to offshore casinos to continue operations in River Mandovi till March 2027,” said Sawant
The casinos have been given additional time to operate in the river as authorities have yet to determine an alternative site where the vessels can be shifted.
While the government tentatively identified a number of locations, they were met with objections and found to be technically not feasible.
In 2013, the Goa government had taken a policy decision to relocate the off-shore casinos located in the river Mandovi.
The Home department along with Captain of Ports had identified four sites for the purpose of relocating the offshore casinos from river Mandovi – at the mouth of river Mandovi, near Aguada jail, two locations in the river Zuari east the bridge and west of the bridge and in river Chapora
The extension is subject to the condition of relocating once an alternate site is determined.
Sawant also announced that the Governor’s address to the assembly session is scheduled to take place on February 6th, 2025.
He also informed that he chaired a comprehensive Finance Review Meeting with Secretaries and Heads of Departments (HoDs) in preparation for the upcoming visit of the 16th Finance Commission to the state.
“The meeting focused on assessing the financial progress of key departments, reviewing revenue generation, departmental expenditure, and the status of ongoing infrastructure projects across Goa,” he added
Sawant said that detailed deliberations were held on proposals and key demands to be presented to the 16th Finance Commission, ensuring alignment with the state’s development priorities and financial needs.
The Chief Minister also said that this review aimed to consolidate Goa’s position and secure adequate support for its infrastructural and economic growth, emphasizing strategic planning and efficient resource allocation.
