PERNEM: The Pernem police have registered an offence against Sameer Korgaonkar, a resident of Khajne-Pernem, for allegedly making casteist remarks against a minor girl from the village. The incident has sparked public outrage, with villagers staging protests at the Pernem police station.
According to sources, thealleged incident occurred on Tuesday evening when Korgaonkar, while riding his two-wheeler, encountered the minor girl riding in the opposite direction. An argument reportedly broke out during which the girl accused Korgaonkar of grabbing her shirt and making caste-based derogatory comments.
Upon learning of the incident, a group of angry villagers gathered at the Pernem police station late Tuesday night, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused. Pernem Police Inspector Sachin Lokre assured them that necessary action would be taken, after which the crowd dispersed.
Tensions flared again on Wednesday evening when villagers returned to the police station seeking updates on the case. They were stopped at the station gate by a police team. Later, DySP Shirodkar and PI Lokre met with the protestors and informed them that a team had been formed to trace the accused. However, the officials were unable to provide a specific timeline for his arrest.
