QUEPEM: Heavy vehicles continue to move, speeding through the weak, narrow bridge of Avedem-Paroda despite strict warning and order from the Deputy Collector prohibiting heavy vehicles via this bridge.
What could be termed as daredevilry and negligence, the heavy vehicles moving speedily over the Avedem Paroda bridge when the Deputy Collector has issued an order forbidding the heavy vehicles via this bridge due to the fear of collapsing of this weak, narrow bridge which is the only connectivity to Avedem and Paroda village.
It is well-known that this Paroda bridge goes underwater during the rainy season due to the increase in the water level of the Kushawati river.
This bridge was built during Portuguese time, and as years passed, it remains strong as a giant even though there is no proper maintenance of this bridge.
But now, this bridge has become weak due to climatic conditions and the lack of maintenance. Some lower section of this bridge has developed cracks. Locals have raised questions about the safety and security of the bridge and its people.
Joe Fernandes said when locals repeatedly raised this issue about the bridge’s poor condition, the inspection was held where the Deputy collector issued an order restricting the heavy vehicles on this bridge.
But the ground reality is that a Special heavy lorry of 10 tyres and 12 tyres continues to ply through this bridge.
Another local, Vishal Desai, said our local people are demanding restrictions on heavy vehicles on this bridge who are plying from this bridge which is a major problem. Further, he said Panchayat and BDO have got the order and also in last gram sabha, the resolution has been taken for the same issue, but till now, neither panchayat nor BDO has erected any barricades on the bridge.
