PANAJI: The recently concluded Corporation of the City of Panaji (CCP) elections have come under legal scrutiny, with a petition filed in the North Goa District Court alleging serious violations of voter confidentiality.
The plea, submitted by Vishnu Naik along with three others, was officially registered on April 8. The petitioners have raised objections to the numbering system used during the polling process, particularly concerning the counterfoils attached to ballot papers.
According to the petition, the presence of matching serial numbers on both the counterfoils and the ballot papers could make it possible to trace votes back to individual voters, thereby undermining the secrecy of the ballot—considered a cornerstone of free and fair elections.
Questioning the process, the petitioners argued that linking serial numbers between issued ballots and counterfoils raises doubts about whether voter anonymity was adequately protected.
The CCP elections were held on March 11, with results declared on March 13. The Babush Panel secured a sweeping victory, winning 27 out of the 30 seats in the municipal corporation.
The court is now expected to examine the allegations, which could have significant implications for the validity of the electoral process.
