New Delhi: Tensions continue to mount along the Line of Control (LoC) as Pakistan violated the ceasefire for the fourth straight night, targeting areas in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kupwara and Poonch districts. The Indian Army retaliated strongly to the unprovoked firing.
According to an official statement, “During the night of April 27–28, Pakistan Army posts initiated unprovoked small arms fire across the LoC opposite Kupwara and Poonch districts. Indian troops responded swiftly and effectively.”
This marks the first instance of ceasefire violations in the Poonch sector during the current flare-up, indicating a possible horizontal escalation by Pakistan.
The latest incidents come in the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22, in which 26 civilians were killed in Baisaran valley. While The Resistance Front (TRF), believed to be affiliated with Pakistan-based Lashkar-e-Taiba, initially claimed responsibility, it later denied involvement. The attack has led to widespread outrage across India.
In response, India has taken a series of diplomatic and economic steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, revoking visas for Pakistani nationals, and shutting down the Attari land border transit point.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, addressing a rally in Bihar, vowed a relentless pursuit of terrorists. “India will identify, track, and punish every terrorist, their handlers, and their backers. We will pursue them to the ends of the earth,” he declared.
In a retaliatory move, Pakistan announced the suspension of the Simla Agreement and all bilateral pacts with India.
High-level security meetings are ongoing in New Delhi. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh held discussions with Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan and later met with the Prime Minister. Another meeting is expected today at 11 am as the government assesses the evolving security situation.
