CANACONA: Stating that the government remains committed to building a vibrant and prosperous Goa, Sports Minister Ramesh Tawadkar on Thursday paid tribute to the freedom fighters who liberated the state from 450 years of foreign rule.
Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs, Tribal Welfare, Art & Culture, and Canacona MLA Ramesh Tawadkar was speaking after unfurling the National Flag and inspecting the Guard of Honour presented by the Goa Police at Canacona on the occasion of the 64th Goa Liberation Day.
“On this historic occasion, we salute the courage and sacrifices of our liberators and reaffirm our commitment to a vibrant and prosperous Goa,” Tawadkar said.
Canacona Municipal Council (CMC) Chairperson Laxuman Pagui, Deputy Collector Prataprao Gaonkar, Dy SP Nilesh Rane, heads of various government departments at the taluka level, staff, freedom fighters, students and members of the public were present.
School students presented a march-past and saluted the Minister, followed by cultural programmes featuring patriotic songs and dances.
Earlier, at the Canacona Municipal Council, Chairperson Laxuman Pagui unfurled the National Flag and took the salute. In his address, Pagui said that the municipality is constructing a new fish market at Chaudi at a cost of Rs 2 crore. He also appealed to citizens to pay municipal taxes and rentals regularly to help make the civic body self-reliant.
Goa Liberation Day was also celebrated across Canacona in schools, higher secondary institutions and colleges with flag hoisting ceremonies and patriotic programmes.
