COLVALE: Central Jail Colvale, in collaboration with the Goa State Commission for Women, today celebrated Rashtriya Poshan Maah 2024 with a series of impactful programs aimed at improving health, nutrition, and well-being within the prison community.
This initiative was led by Omvir Singh, IPS, Inspector General of Prisons who is also the Inspector General of Police, whose commitment to inmate welfare played a pivotal role in the success of the event.
The celebration featured a session on “Nutrition and Anemia,” conducted by the Goa State Commission for Women, aimed at raising awareness about the importance of balanced nutrition, particularly for women inmates.
A new Children’s Playroom was inaugurated in the Female Block, providing a supportive environment for the children of female inmates—a reflection of Shri Omvir Singh’s vision of creating a rehabilitative and humane atmosphere within the jail.
A Millet Recipe Competition was also organized for the women staff of the Jail Administration, IRBn, Goa Police, Home Guards, and GHRDC. The event emphasized the importance of healthy eating habits and encouraged the use of nutrient-rich millets in everyday meals.
Additionally, a Health Camp was held for female inmates, offering them essential medical care and health advice.
As part of the sustainability focus, a Plant Nursery was inaugurated at Central Jail Colvale, followed by a Plantation Drive – Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam, symbolizing the nurturing connection between motherhood and nature.
Shri Omvir Singh, IPS, who inaugurated the event, emphasized the importance of these initiatives for the overall well-being of inmates.
“Our goal is to create a holistic environment where health, nutrition, and rehabilitation go hand in hand. This initiative marks a step forward in our ongoing efforts to enhance the lives of those in our care,” he said. His leadership and dedication were instrumental in shaping the day’s activities, aligning them with broader prison reforms.
