Barcelona:
In a significant gesture of support, India’s External Affairs Minister, S. Jaishankar, has reassured the nation’s farming community of the government’s unwavering commitment to addressing their concerns. This assurance comes at a critical juncture, as farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal continues his hunger strike, highlighting the unresolved issues from the 2021 farmer agitation. Dallewal’s deteriorating health has sparked urgent appeals for dialogue and medical assistance, drawing attention from both the government and the judiciary.
Government’s Commitment and MSP Increases
During his interaction with the Indian Community in Spain, Jaishankar emphasized the complexity of the farmers’ issues and the government’s proactive efforts to resolve them. He underscored the recent increases in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) as a tangible example of the government’s support. However, Jaishankar acknowledged that the issue often becomes politicized, assuring that the government remains dedicated to prioritizing farmers’ welfare.
The increase in MSP is part of a broader strategy to protect farmers’ interests. The government has proposed a five-year agreement to purchase pulses and cotton at MSP through cooperative societies, ensuring no limits on the quantity purchased from farmers. This move is designed to safeguard domestic agriculture while balancing market access, particularly in the context of Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).
Jagjit Singh Dallewal’s Hunger Strike
Farmer leader Jagjit Singh Dallewal has been on a hunger strike since November 26, protesting the non-fulfillment of promises made during the 2021 farmer agitation. Dallewal, the convener of the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political), is demanding a legal guarantee of MSP for crops and has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to engage in talks with farmers. His protest at the Khanouri border has drawn significant attention and concern over his health.
Health Concerns and Judicial Intervention
Punjab Health Minister Balbir Singh has expressed deep concern over Dallewal’s deteriorating health, urging Prime Minister Modi to initiate dialogue with the farmer leader. The Supreme Court has also intervened, ordering the Punjab government to ensure Dallewal receives proper medical aid during his fast. The court clarified that its directives are aimed at ensuring Dallewal’s wellbeing without compelling him to end his hunger strike.
Ongoing Efforts and Future Directions
The government’s commitment to farmers is not limited to MSP increases. Jaishankar’s remarks reflect a broader commitment to addressing the multifaceted issues faced by farmers. The government is cautiously navigating Free Trade Agreements to prevent adverse impacts on domestic agriculture and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). As the situation continues to unfold, the government’s actions will be closely watched by the farming community and the nation at large.
