Panaji: Recognising the urgent need to improve ocean awareness in a coastal state vulnerable to climate change and rising sea levels, the Government of India launched a focused public engagement campaign in Goa through a one-day workshop titled ‘Vartalap – Know the Ocean Around Us’ on Thursday.
Organised by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), Goa, under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, the event brought together India’s leading marine and polar research agencies—CSIR-NIO, NCPOR—and the Indian Coast Guard in a collaborative effort to educate the public on ocean science, coastal safety, and national research initiatives.
Speaking at the inauguration, Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavde called for deeper public connection with Central Government institutions. “Goa is home to several national agencies offering services, schemes, and research that directly impact our communities. Citizens must be made aware so they can benefit and engage meaningfully,” he said.
The workshop highlighted India’s oceanographic capabilities through presentations by Dr. Manguesh Gawas and Dr. Pawan Dewangan of CSIR-NIO, who explained the critical role of marine research in environmental sustainability, coastal development, and resource management.
The Indian Coast Guard, represented by Deputy Commandant Arun Kumar, showcased its dual role in maritime surveillance and humanitarian response—particularly relevant to Goa’s monsoon and tourism-driven coastline.
From NCPOR, Dr. Avinash Kumar and Dr. Swati Nagar briefed attendees on India’s scientific leadership in polar research and its direct connection to global climate patterns affecting the Indian Ocean.
PIB Director Nana Meshram said the event was part of a wider government push to break down silos between science, governance, and public understanding. “These institutions hold a wealth of knowledge and public service tools. Our role is to ensure this knowledge reaches every citizen.”
The event served as a timely reminder of the need for climate resilience, scientific literacy, and improved public access to government services in coastal regions like Goa, which are on the frontlines of environmental and economic shifts.
