CANACONA: In a much-awaited but long-delayed move, the Central Government has issued a final notification for the acquisition of 88 private land plots measuring a total of 78,541 square metres (7.85 hectares) at Loliem, Canacona, to facilitate the improvement of curves and the construction of a toll plaza as part of the four-laning of National Highway 66. The section falls between the end of the Manohar Parrikar Canacona Bypass Road (MPCBR) at Maxem and the Polem-Karnataka border.
The acquisition covers land classified under various zones, including orchards, natural cover, khazans, no-development slopes, settlement areas, and paddy fields, spanning from Km 602.900 to Km 610.900 of the highway in Goa. The project falls under the annual road infrastructure plan of 2023–24.
According to the notification issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways on June 13, 2025, no objections were received during the public notice period, and the ownership of the land now fully vests with the Central Government under the provisions of the National Highways Act, free from all encumbrances.
The acquisition has affected more than 338 private individuals, as well as two religious institutions—Keshav Devalaya and Nirankar Dev—a Holy Cross Chapel, and at least one private limited company. The development marks a key milestone for the completion of the four-laning work of NH-66 in South Goa.
