New Delhi: The government is preparing to take legal action against major e-commerce platforms, including Amazon, Flipkart, Myntra, Meesho, and Bigbasket, for selling products that lack mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification, sources revealed. This move follows a series of raids conducted by BIS officials earlier this year.
In March, BIS inspectors carried out multiple raids at Amazon and Flipkart warehouses, uncovering over 11,000 items such as toys, kitchen appliances, and electrical equipment being sold without the required certification. These findings have raised serious concerns over consumer safety and regulatory compliance on these platforms.
The BIS is now in the process of filing cases against the companies under the BIS Act of 2016 in a magistrate court. The law allows for penalties that can be up to ten times the value of the non-compliant products sold, along with imprisonment for up to two years.
Earlier in March, BIS had already filed legal cases against Techvision International Pvt Ltd, a major supplier of uncertified goods, for breaching safety standards.
The government’s strict enforcement action signals a growing emphasis on ensuring that products sold online meet quality and safety standards, protecting consumers from substandard or potentially hazardous goods.
