Canacona: Amidst a relentless downpour across the region, Chapoli Dam—Canacona’s sole lifeline for drinking and irrigation water—began to overflow on Sunday, marking a significant development in the taluka’s monsoon timeline.
Receiving the highest recorded rainfall in the state on Sunday, Canacona saw its primary water source reach full capacity, with the reservoir level touching 38.75 RL (Reduced Level) by the afternoon. The consistent rainfall over the dam’s extensive catchment area, particularly connected with the Chapoli River, triggered the dam’s concrete spillway to discharge excess water by Sunday evening.
According to local sources, the dam level was hovering around 38.50 RL late Saturday, but intense overnight and early morning showers caused a sharp rise in water levels. By afternoon, the reservoir reached the overflow mark, and the spillway became fully active shortly thereafter.
The Chapoli Dam, stretching 500 metres in length, has a catchment area of approximately 14 square kilometers and a storage capacity of 1122 HaM (hectare-metres), equivalent to about 8 million cubic metres. As of Sunday night, the recorded storage stood at 1122.31 HaM.
The total rainfall recorded in Canacona on Sunday reached an impressive 2101 mm, underscoring the intensity of the monsoonal surge across Goa’s southernmost taluka.
With the dam now overflowing, authorities and locals are keeping a close watch on downstream river activity, while irrigation and water supply departments confirm continued monitoring of the situation to ensure safety and optimal resource utilization.
