Valpoi: Check dams constructed across various rivers in Sattari taluka are proving to be highly beneficial from an irrigation perspective, bringing significant relief to local farmers. The dams have enabled the storage of large quantities of water, which is now being effectively utilised for irrigation, supporting agricultural and horticultural activities across the region.
According to available information, the impounding of water in a total of 30 check dams constructed on different rivers in Sattari taluka has been completed. In several areas, farmers have already started receiving water through lift irrigation schemes, contributing to overall agricultural development. Officials of the Water Resources Department (WRD), Valpoi, stated that due to these initiatives, lakhs of square metres of land have been brought under irrigation, ensuring adequate water availability for farming. Farmers, they added, are deriving substantial benefits from the scheme.
Check Dam Scheme Implemented Since 2005
The check dam scheme has been implemented since 2005 on rivers such as the Mhadei, Ragada, Valvanti, Velus and other tributaries in Sattari taluka. The project was initiated under the guidance of the then Chief Minister Pratapsingh Rane with the objective of arresting rainwater flow, storing water and utilising it for agriculture and horticulture through lift irrigation systems.
Around 30 small and large check dams have been constructed on these rivers, resulting in substantial water storage. Iron shutters fitted to the dams help retain water, which remains available for agricultural use until the month of May.
Boost To Agriculture And Horticulture
Prior to the implementation of the scheme, farming was not feasible in many areas due to the lack of irrigation facilities. However, post-2005, large-scale cultivation has commenced on lands that were earlier barren. Crops such as coconut, arecanut, mango, cashew and banana are now being cultivated extensively, leading to a significant boost in horticultural activity throughout Sattari taluka. The scheme has not only benefitted existing farmers but has also encouraged new plantations.
Water Supply Through Lift Irrigation Schemes
Water stored in the check dams is supplied to farmers through lift irrigation schemes, for which pump houses have been constructed at various locations. This enables direct water supply to agricultural fields. Farmers receive regular water supply by paying a nominal fee to the Water Resources Department. Due to the efficient functioning of the system and the dedicated efforts of WRD staff, farmers have expressed satisfaction with the lift irrigation schemes.
Shutters To Be Removed In First Week Of June
Water is stored in the check dams using iron shutters installed on the structures. With the onset of the monsoon, these shutters are removed to allow the natural flow of river water. According to the Water Resources Department, the shutters are scheduled to be removed in the first week of June, based on rainfall forecasts. Officials clarified that in the event of early or heavy rainfall, the shutters are removed immediately to prevent excess water flow and avoid flood-like situations.
