MAJORDA: The Chennai-based National Centre for Sustainable Coastal Management ( NCSCM) has commenced a comprehensive assessment of the Goa coast as part of preparing a shoreline management plan that will detail various measures to be taken to protect the coast from sea erosion.
The NCSCM team today commenced the ground inspection from Majorda Beach in the presence of Environment Minister Alexio Sequeria.
“The Aerial study has already been conducted and ground study will commence now,” the Minister said.
He further said that the rise in water level is a natural phenomenon, and it happens at Majorda Beach, I am sure the locals are aware of it.
“Have appointed Chennai-based agency ‘NCSCM’ to study coastline of the state, study to begin from Majorda beach,” the Minister said.
The minister also said that the NCSCM team has landed in Goa yesterday and today they visited Majorda beach, the team would visit across Goa to conduct the study.
“Before they round up, our department would have a meeting with the entire NCSCM team,” he informed.
Officials said that the aim is to create a joint understanding of the causes of erosion, to provide confirmation for the approach and to perform first capacity building on the relevant coastal processes.
“We will summarise the discussed approach and further detail this in a concise report.” the official said.
According to the NCSCM study conducted in 2022-23, Goa’s 105-km long coastline, from Querim (Keri) in the north to Polem in the south, is 35% rocky, 20% stable and has 27% erosion and 17% accretion.
There are a total of 21 beaches that are reeling under the threat of sea erosion. Most of the beaches which saw erosion were located in South Goa, including Betalbatim, Canaguinnim, Cansaulim, Patnem, Sernaba tim, Talpona, Utorda and Velsao.
Erosion was seen in North Goa only on the beaches of Ashvem, Querim, Sinquerim and Vagator.
