VASCO: In a proactive response to the recent horrific rape and murder of a doctor in Calcutta that has sent shockwaves across the nation, the Chicalim Sub District Hospital (SDH) has initiated a martial arts workshop for its female staff.
The workshop aims to equip women with essential self-defence skills, reflecting the urgent need for safety and empowerment in today’s society.
Dr. Sujata Kamat, in charge of Chicalim SDH, spoke to the media about the initiative. “With the rising incidents of crime against women in the last few months, we realized the critical importance of self-defence for females.
In today’s world, it’s crucial to be self-dependent, both mentally and physically. We can no longer solely rely on others for protection,” she stated.
The workshop, led by Karate Instructor Suraj Paradkar, was offered to the hospital staff at no cost, thanks to the efforts of Sister Sneha Mandrekar, who facilitated the connection. “We are extremely grateful to Suraj Paradkar for his generosity. The response from our staff was overwhelming, and the initiative was a great success. Our team learned valuable self-defence techniques that will enable them to protect themselves in any unfortunate situation,” Dr Kamat added.
Suraj Suhas Paradkar, a 5th-degree black belt and the chief instructor of Champions Club in Goa, expressed his commitment to the cause. “We had around 40 female staff members participating in the workshop. We covered basic self-defence steps and ground fighting techniques, which are essential for personal safety. I urge schools and educational institutions across Goa to make martial arts and self-defence training a compulsory part of the curriculum. Training at a young age can make a significant difference in the lives of young girls and boys,” Paradkar said.
The workshop has been hailed as a crucial step towards empowering women and ensuring their safety in an increasingly unsafe world. The Chicalim SDH’s initiative sets an example for other institutions to follow, emphasizing the importance of self-defence education for all.
