CHICALIM: In a significant recognition of its green initiatives, the Village Panchayat Chicalim has been awarded the First Place in the Best Environmental Practices Competition for Local Bodies under the UNEP theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally”. The award was presented on the occasion of World Environment Day 2025 by the Goa State Pollution Control Board.
Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant handed over the award to Chicalim Sarpanch Kamla Prasad Yadav and Deputy Sarpanch Aishwarya Korgaonkar at a special function held in Panaji. The event was attended by Rajya Sabha MP Sadanand Shet Tanavade and other dignitaries, who lauded the efforts of local bodies in promoting sustainable environmental practices.
Speaking on the occasion, CM Dr Sawant commended Chicalim Panchayat for leading by example in the fight against plastic pollution and promoting eco-friendly measures at the grassroots level. He stressed the importance of community-driven initiatives in achieving environmental goals and aligning with the global vision of the United Nations Environment Programme.
Sarpanch Yadav expressed gratitude on behalf of the Panchayat and credited the award to the collective efforts of the panchayat members, staff, and the villagers who actively participated in plastic-free campaigns and waste management drives. Deputy Sarpanch Korgaonkar highlighted various initiatives undertaken, including awareness programmes, segregation of waste, and promotion of cloth bags and biodegradable alternatives.
The award stands as a testament to Chicalim’s commitment to environmental sustainability and is expected to inspire other panchayats across the state to adopt greener practices.
