Panaji: Villagers from Chimbel on Monday staged a protest at Azad Maidan opposing the proposed Unity Mall project, reiterating their demand for clear and official communication from the government regarding the project’s relocation.
The protesters asserted that they are not against development but want proper clarity from the authorities on whether the project will be shifted away from their village. Expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of official response so far, they issued a one-day ultimatum to the government to address their concerns.
Ajay Kholkar, who is leading the protest, said the villagers are seeking a written assurance from the General Administration Department (GAD) and the Tourism Department. “We want clear and official communication. Verbal assurances are not enough. The government must put its stand in writing,” Kholkar said.
He warned that if no response is received by evening, the villagers will collectively decide their next course of action. “The ball is now in the government’s court. If our demands are ignored, we will intensify our agitation,” he added.
The Unity Mall project has faced resistance from local residents, who fear its impact on land, livelihood, and the village’s overall environment. Despite repeated representations, villagers claim there has been no transparent communication from the authorities, prompting them to take to the streets.
