Old Goa: Old Goa Police have registered a case of cheating after a woman from Chimbel was allegedly duped of ₹1.39 lakh by three unknown persons in an elaborate online matrimonial and courier scam.
According to police, Crime No. 24/2026 was registered at Old Goa Police Station on February 9, 2026, at around 11.35 pm under Sections 318(4), 319(2) read with Section 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. The complaint was lodged by a woman resident of Indira Nagar, Chimbel, Tiswadi, whose identity has been withheld.
The complainant stated that on January 29, 2026, at about 9.22 am, three unknown accused persons, acting with common intention, contacted her through different mobile numbers. One accused posed as a suitable match on an online matrimonial platform, shadi.com, while the others impersonated a courier delivery person and an officer from the Customs Department.
Police said the accused, under the pretext of sending a courier parcel allegedly containing gold and cash, induced the complainant to make payments amounting to ₹1,39,000 through UPI. Believing their representations to be genuine, the complainant transferred the amount; however, she never received any parcel.
Police added that the accused thereafter became untraceable, thereby cheating the complainant of ₹1.39 lakh. Further investigation in the case is being carried out by PSI Sanket S. Pokhare of Old Goa Police Station.
Police have advised the public to exercise caution while interacting with unknown persons on matrimonial platforms and to verify any demands for money before making online payments.
