MARGAO: Consumer rights group Goacan has emphasized the availability of foreign cigarettes in the state and suggested that the state government seek to stop the revenue leaks brought on by the smuggling of these cigarettes.
Government initiatives to reduce smoking among children and teenagers need to be stepped up, according to Goacan coordinator Roland Martins.
He claimed that illicit cigarettes in a variety of flavors are brought into Goa, sold to kids and tourists, and then brought into other countries untaxed.
“These foreign cigarettes are readily available throughout the state, do not have a manufacturing date, and do not pay tax. People leaving the nation need to have their bags scanned by airport and customs officials, according to Martins.
He claimed that the cigarettes are being smuggled into the UK from China and other nations using trains and buses.
He also said that Goa should work towards becoming a smoke-free tourist destination.
“If we do this, Goa will get a higher standard as a tourist destination,” said Martins
