PANAJI: The Cinephile Film Club of the Entertainment Society of Goa will host a special screening of the silent horror classic Nosferatu on Thursday, February 19, at 6.30 pm at Maquinez Palace Theatre. The 90 minute film will be accompanied by live, improvised music, recreating the original viewing experience of early twentieth century cinema.
Directed by F. W. Murnau, Nosferatu is regarded as a landmark of German Expressionist cinema and one of the most influential works in horror film history. Released in 1922, the film is an unofficial adaptation of Bram Stoker’s 1897 novel Dracula. Though it sparked legal controversy at the time, the film developed a distinct identity through its haunting imagery and atmospheric storytelling.
More than a century later, Nosferatu continues to be celebrated for its striking visuals, especially the unsettling presence of Count Orlok and the film’s bold use of shadow and composition. Despite numerous reinterpretations of the Dracula legend across decades and cultures, Murnau’s version remains a defining reference point for cinematic horror.
Enhancing the screening will be a live score performed by cellist Martin Melendez and pianist Guy Hershberg, who will also incorporate synthesizer. The musicians will improvise in real time, responding to the film’s shifting moods and intensifying its emotional depth. This approach reflects the tradition of silent era exhibitions, when films were rarely shown without live musical accompaniment.
The initiative underscores the film club’s commitment to presenting thoughtfully curated cinema throughout the year, extending beyond major festivals. Tickets for the screening will be available at the venue on a first come first served basis.
