DABOLIM: The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) has achieved a major milestone in the Ministry of Home Affairs’ (MHA) ‘Shri Anna’ initiative by surpassing the targeted 30% millet consumption across its 434 units and formations nationwide. This accomplishment reflects CISF’s strong commitment to promoting health and sustainability through the adoption of millets, or ‘Shri Anna’, among its personnel, their families, and the broader community.
The initiative gained momentum following the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of 2023 as the ‘International Year of Millets’. On May 4, 2023, the MHA mandated the inclusion of millets in the daily diet of all Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs) with a target of achieving 30% consumption by 2024-25.
CISF employed a comprehensive strategy to meet and exceed this target. Through regular briefings, Sainik Sammelans, and welfare meetings, jawans were educated on the health benefits of millets. Family engagement was a key focus, with efforts to include millet-based dishes in home meals and official functions.
A unique highlight of the campaign is the release of “Shri Anna Sarathi”, a booklet featuring traditional millet recipes, cook feedback, and personal stories of improved health within the Force. The guide is available in both print and digital formats via the CISF website.
All CISF cooks have received training in preparing millet-based dishes. The Force has hosted 1,110 seminars and workshops, along with 662 expert lectures by dietitians and doctors to further spread awareness and bust myths about millets.
In an outreach effort, CISF organized 335 “Millet Melas”, showcasing millet dishes and offering tastings to encourage wider acceptance among personnel and the public. Additionally, millet products are now available at Kendriya Police Kalyan Bhandar outlets to ensure easy access.
Millets, known for being climate-resilient and nutrient-rich, require minimal resources to cultivate. CISF’s proactive efforts are not only aiding national health and environmental goals but also supporting millet farmers and strengthening local supply chains.
“This success is a shining example of how innovative strategies and consistent effort can drive meaningful change,” said Ajay Dahiya, Deputy Inspector General and Chief Public Relations Officer, CISF.
