PANAJI: Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Thursday raised alarm over the surge in road accidents caused by traffic violations, particularly by tourists using rented vehicles.
He said that such violations account for nearly 70% of road mishaps in the state.
Speaking to reporters, the Chief Minister emphasized the urgent need for stricter regulation and enforcement of traffic laws to curb the growing number of accidents.
“The traffic department is actively working to cancel registrations of rented vehicles found violating traffic rules,” Sawant said.
The Chief Minister called on the public to cooperate with law enforcement agencies, underlining the role of civic responsibility in ensuring road safety.
“Enforcement alone is not enough. Citizens must also act responsibly and follow traffic norms,” he added.
With Goa being a popular tourist destination, rented two-wheelers and cars have become common on state roads.
Authorities say many of these vehicles are involved in reckless driving, overspeeding, and parking violations, contributing significantly to the state’s accident statistics.
The state government is reportedly exploring further regulatory measures and stricter monitoring of rental services to address the issue.
