MARGAO: Citizens at a public meeting have passed a resolution condemning the alleged custodial assault on Edberg Pereira and demanding strong action against the police officials involved.
The resolution, adopted unanimously, denounced the “inhuman and brutal act” of chaining Pereira’s feet and assaulting him inside the police station, which reportedly left him severely injured. The gathering demanded that Pereira not be discharged from the hospital until he has fully recovered, both physically and mentally.
The citizens further stated that the existing FIR against the accused officers was “not satisfactory or complete” and urged the authorities to add Section 307 (attempt to murder) to the case. They also called for the immediate suspension of PSI Nilesh Shirodkar, Miguel Vaz, Ajay Jangi, and others allegedly linked to the incident pending the outcome of the inquiry.
The resolution appealed to Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant to take swift action, including suspending senior officers if necessary, and to ensure an impartial investigation. It also sought the release of CCTV footage from the police station to bring clarity to the incident.
The citizens urged the government to stop “importing officers from outside Goa” and instead entrust key responsibilities to capable Goan officers familiar with the local culture and community.
The resolution concluded with a demand for justice for Pereira and accountability for those responsible for the alleged custodial assault.
