PANAJI: Panaji witnessed a strong public demonstration as residents and activists gathered at the Institute Menezes Braganza hall to oppose the entry of a new casino vessel into the Mandovi River.
The meeting, attended by citizens from across Goa, concluded with the adoption of multiple resolutions urging the government to take immediate action to eventually phase out the casino industry.
The protest centered on the planned arrival of the Deltin casino vessel, a massive ship measuring 112 metres in length and 30 metres in height. Speakers raised concerns that accommodating such mega vessels, including dredging and other river modifications, could cause irreversible harm to the fragile Mandovi ecosystem.
Environmental preservation emerged as the dominant theme, with participants emphasizing the need to protect the river’s biodiversity and heritage from commercial exploitation.
The gathering also highlighted cultural and social issues, criticizing the government’s continued promotion of Goa as a gambling destination. Citizens warned that prioritizing casinos risks tarnishing the state’s reputation and urged authorities to reposition Goa as a family-friendly tourism hub, celebrating its natural beauty, cultural heritage, and traditional hospitality.
Speakers stressed that the matter went beyond a single vessel, reflecting broader concerns about the state’s tourism policies. They argued that favoring casinos undermines sustainable development and erodes Goa’s cultural identity. The assembly also called for a structured rehabilitation plan for casino employees, aiming to balance environmental protection with livelihood security.
The meeting concluded with a call for sustained civic engagement, urging residents to remain vigilant and united in opposing the casino industry while organizers committed to continuing their campaign to safeguard the Mandovi River and promote responsible, sustainable tourism in Goa.
