Margao: At a time when uncertainty looms over the future of Street Providence’s operations, concerned citizens from Margao and various parts of Goa gathered on Sunday to extend their appreciation and unwavering support to the NGO for its tireless service to the homeless and neglected.
The event, convened by the civic group Citizens for Democracy, saw an overwhelming show of solidarity, with attendees urging founder Donald Fernandes not to halt the NGO’s work. The gathering also resolved to petition the government to collaborate with the organisation and provide institutional support.
Noted educationist Dr. Prabhakar Timble, who was the Chief Guest, expressed dismay at what he described as a declining sense of compassion in Goan society. “The society today has become more aggressive and indifferent, a sharp contrast to what it was 25 years ago,” he remarked. He called on citizens to rekindle the spirit of empathy and kindness that once defined Goa’s community ethos and appealed to Fernandes to continue his work that had touched hundreds of lives.
Retired bureaucrats Elvis Gomes and Bosco George were present as Guests of Honour. Gomes, drawing from his personal experiences, praised the dedication of Street Providence volunteers who provide critical care and rehabilitation to the destitute. He criticised the government’s lack of timely support and announced that he would lead a delegation to meet the Chief Minister to advocate for formal assistance to the organisation.
Advocate Caroline Collaso also addressed the gathering and echoed the call for state partnership. In a symbolic gesture of gratitude, Donald Fernandes was honoured with a traditional shawl, coconut and plaque presented by Dr. Timble on behalf of the citizens.
The event was compered by Yogesh Nagvekar, who also delivered the vote of thanks.
