MORMUGAO: A new City Livelihood Centre (CLC) was inaugurated at the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) building by Panchayats Minister Mauvin Godinho, in the presence of Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar, MMC Chairperson Girish Borker, and other dignitaries.
The CLC, developed by the MMC in association with the Goa State Urban Development Agency (GSUDA), aims to provide a sustainable livelihood platform for women and Self Help Groups (SHGs) by enabling them to sell homemade and eco-friendly products under one roof.
Speaking to reporters after the inauguration, Minister Mauvin Godinho commended the initiative and said, “Women who make homemade items will now have a place to sell their products. I congratulate MMC and Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar for this initiative which will help women engaged in small businesses. The BJP government under the leadership of PM Narendra Modi has always supported women through various welfare schemes. When women grow, society prospers. This CLC is an important step towards empowering women to earn a livelihood and support themselves. Good marketing efforts will further help them reach a wider customer base.”
Vasco MLA Krishna Salkar thanked the MMC for offering space for the CLC, calling it a move in line with the ‘vocal for local’ initiative promoted by PM Modi.
“This CLC will not only provide employment to women and SHGs but also offer clean, homemade products to Vascokars. In today’s time, when youth are drawn towards fast food, dieticians recommend shifting back to homemade products for better health. The CLC will be especially helpful during festival times like Saptah and Ganesh Chaturthi, as it will serve as a permanent hub for SHGs to display and sell their goods,” said Salkar.
MMC Chairperson Girish Borker said the initiative was a step towards empowering women and promoting small-scale entrepreneurship.
“Many SHGs make good products but don’t have a stable place to sell them. They often have to shift from one location to another. So, we decided to offer them a permanent space from the council’s side. We invite all SHGs to contact us and make the most of this opportunity so that they can grow their business and we can take pride in contributing to a meaningful cause,” Borker said.
