Panaji: Goa Forward Party President and Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai has demanded a clear clarification from the Chief Minister of Goa on the teaching of Konkani in the Roman script in schools. Sardesai stated that the matter is not about “conducting government in Konkani,” but about ensuring that students, especially from the Catholic community, are taught the language in a script that reflects their cultural identity.
He pointed out that while the CM recently claimed the issue was settled in 1962, he also cited a new NEP committee decision. Sardesai questioned this contradiction and asked the CM to clarify three things: whether the 1962 stance still stands, whether the NEP committee’s recommendation is final, and what the government’s position is on the script on culture and religion for the Catholic minority. He also cited Article 29(1) of the Constitution, which protects the right of minorities to preserve their language and script.
