New Delhi: Tension prevailed in parts of Murshidabad on Friday after clashes broke out during Ram Navami processions, with incidents of stone pelting, vandalism and arson reported from several locations.
Police said the violence was reported from areas including Jangipur and Raghunathganj, where security forces have been deployed in large numbers to prevent further escalation. Officials stated that no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
According to police, the situation turned volatile when an altercation during a procession escalated into clashes between two groups. Participants in a large procession were heading towards Mackenzie Park when the first signs of trouble emerged.
Authorities said the confrontation began in the Sisatala locality following a dispute over music being played during the procession. The argument soon escalated, leading to stone pelting between participants and local residents.
The tension intensified near Phultala Crossing where further incidents of stone pelting were reported. Several shops were vandalised and some were set on fire, worsening the situation and spreading panic in the area.
Police and security personnel were rushed to the affected locations and conducted route marches to restore order. Officials said additional forces have been deployed while patrols continue across sensitive areas to maintain peace and prevent further violence.
Authorities confirmed that the situation is now under control, with continuous monitoring underway. Officials also stated that strict action will be taken against those found responsible for the violence.
Political reactions followed the incidents, with leaders calling for a thorough investigation and urging the administration to maintain law and order.
The unrest comes at a sensitive time as West Bengal prepares for elections to its 294 member legislative assembly. Voting is scheduled to take place on April 23 and April 29, with the counting of votes set for May 4.
