NEW DELHI: Union Minister of State for Power Shripad Naik on Thursday underlined that reliable energy forms the backbone of human progress, with essentials such as food, water, transport, and communication relying on it. He was speaking at a workshop on Distributed Renewable Energy (DRE) organised by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) in collaboration with the International Solar Alliance at Atal Akshay Urja Bhavan, New Delhi.
The workshop was attended by MNRE Secretary Santosh Sarangi, National Green Hydrogen Mission Director Abhay Bakre, International Solar Alliance Director General Ashish Khanna, as well as ambassadors and diplomats from Latin American and Caribbean nations.
Naik highlighted that the surge in energy demand makes energy security a critical national priority, while also noting the cross-border and intergenerational consequences of climate change. “Development must be powered by clean and inclusive energy solutions that are sustainable and accessible to all,” he stressed.
He pointed out that India has taken major strides in renewable energy adoption. The country’s first Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) in 2015 set a target of achieving 40% installed capacity from non-fossil fuels by 2030, which was achieved as early as 2021. Later, in August 2022, the target was revised to 50% by 2030. “I am pleased to share that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, we achieved this milestone five years ahead of schedule,” Naik said.
