Panaji: In a significant move aimed at tightening the regulation of sewage disposal in Goa, Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant announced that GPS tracking systems are being installed in all sewage tankers operating across the State. The step is intended to crack down on unauthorised sewage dumping and bring greater accountability to tanker operations.
Responding to a Calling Attention Motion raised jointly by five opposition MLAs, led by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, the Chief Minister assured the House that the government is taking concrete steps to address the issue of unchecked sewage discharge, which is posing serious threats to public health and the environment.
“We have already begun fitting GPS devices in sewage tankers. This will put an end to illegal dumping. Additionally, all authorised tankers have been colour-coded in mustard yellow for easy identification,” Sawant informed the Assembly.
Opposition members highlighted the dire situation in several urban and semi-urban areas, citing frequent sewage overflows, poorly planned pumping stations, and rising environmental concerns due to mismanaged sewerage systems. They demanded swift and effective government intervention.
In response, the Chief Minister reiterated that strict enforcement is underway. He cautioned citizens against allowing any unregistered or unmarked tankers to operate in their areas, stating clearly that such vehicles will be seized.
“Only colour-coded, GPS-enabled and officially registered sewage tankers will be permitted. We are closely monitoring all movement,” Sawant said, adding that the administration is determined to bring order and discipline to sewage management in Goa.
