Panaji: Reacting to the announcement by Street Providence to shut down its operations, Chief Minister Pramod Sawant accused some organisations of resorting to “blackmail tactics” when procedures are not followed.
Speaking in the Assembly after the issue was raised by Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao, the Chief Minister clarified that the government had recently released ₹50 lakh to Street Providence, a charitable organisation known for its work with the homeless and destitute. However, he pointed out that the group has not submitted the necessary utilisation certificate and other mandatory documentation.
“We have asked them to submit additional documents, which are still pending. Once they comply, we are ready to provide all benefits,” Sawant said, reaffirming the government’s willingness to support NGOs that meet compliance norms.
LoP Yuri Alemao had questioned the government on the status of support to the organisation and warned that the closure would negatively impact vulnerable communities dependent on their services.
The CM’s remarks suggest that while financial aid is available, procedural accountability remains a prerequisite for continued support.
