PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant on Thursday congratulated Ganesh Gaonkar on being elected as the new Speaker of the Goa Legislative Assembly, expressing full confidence that he would “do justice to the chair” and conduct the House with fairness and dignity.
Sawant said the Speaker’s post carries immense responsibility in upholding the democratic functioning of the Assembly and ensuring smooth proceedings. “I am confident Ganesh Gaonkar will discharge his duties impartially and protect the decorum of the House,” the Chief Minister said.
Leader of Opposition Yuri Alemao also congratulated Gaonkar but underlined the need for neutrality. “The Speaker cannot be ‘hop on and hop off’; he has to be neutral and cannot be part of the government. I am sure the Speaker will give us equal opportunities,” Alemao remarked.
Gaonkar, a BJP legislator from Sanguem, was elected unopposed to succeed Ramesh Tawadkar, who resigned from the Speaker’s post earlier this week.
