Panaji: On the occasion of World Environment Day 2025, Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant addressed a gathering at Raj Bhavan, reaffirming the state’s commitment to sustainable development under the UNEP theme “Ending Plastic Pollution Globally.”
In the presence of Member of Parliament Shri Sadanand Shet Tanavade, Chief Secretary, and distinguished guests including Padma Shri awardees Dr. Prakash and Mandakini Amte, the Chief Minister unveiled a series of landmark environmental documents. These included the Goa State Pollution Control Board (GSPCB) Annual Report, the Khazan Land Management Plan, the Mangrove Management Plan, and the National Workshop Report on coastal erosion studies.
Additionally, Dr. Sawant launched the Goa Coastal Zone Management Authority (GCZMA) and Directorate of Environment & Climate Change (DOECC) online portals, aimed at enhancing transparency and environmental governance.
Highlighting Goa’s achievements, Dr. Sawant noted that the state ranks third lowest in the country in plastic production and usage. He emphasized the government’s ongoing efforts to transform waste into wealth through modern Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) and Water Treatment Plants (WTPs), and reiterated the vision for a “Zero Waste Goa.”
Key environmental efforts such as the revival of Khazan lands and mangroves, promotion of eco-friendly Ganpati idols, and the implementation of agro-environmental policies were also highlighted as part of a holistic green agenda.
Aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) mission, Dr. Sawant called upon citizens to pledge against single-use plastic and adopt an eco-conscious lifestyle for a cleaner, greener Goa.
