PANAJI: Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant today reaffirmed his commitment to press freedom, declaring that he has never contacted any editor or news channel to influence or suppress negative news about him.
He said such interference goes against the principles of democracy and the independence of the media.
“I have never called any editor or media house asking them not to publish or air negative news about me. I have never done it and will never do it,” Dr. Sawant asserted, adding that he believes in allowing the press to function without pressure.
Reiterating that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy, the Chief Minister stressed that responsible journalism is essential for maintaining transparency.
“Bringing the truth before the people is the need of the hour. When this doesn’t happen, it creates serious problems. I have suffered and gone through this. That is why journalism must present both sides. Only then can the real truth emerge,” he said.
Marking National Press Day, Dr. Sawant paid tribute to the vital role of a free and professional press in nation-building.
“National Press Day is a tribute to the vital role of a free and responsible press in strengthening democracy. A vibrant press encourages accountability and helps citizens engage with issues that matter. On National Press Day, let us acknowledge our journalists and uphold the value of an independent press in shaping an informed nation,” the Chief Minister said.
