Chief Minister, Dr Pramod Sawant commenced the work of cleaning and desilting of Salaulim Irrigation Project Canal for a length of 60 Kms. under MGNREGA scheme of Department of Rural Development in convergence with Department of Water Resources as a part of Atmanirbhar Bharat and Swayampurna Goa programme at Cotamol, Cuncolim today.
Deputy Chief Minister, Shri Chandrakant Kavlekar; Minister for Water Resources, Shri Filip Neri; Cuncolim MLA, Shri Clafasio Dias; Vice Chairperson, Cuncolim Municipal Council, Shri Videsh Dessai, Councillors, Sarpanchas and Panchas of the vicinity were present on the occasion.
This work has been taken under flagship scheme of District Rural Development Authority (DRDA), Mahatma Gandhi Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGA). Under this project cleaning and desilting of Salaulim irrigation canal project in Sanguem, Quepem and Salcete Taluka will be done.
Speaking on the occasion CM, Dr Sawant said that the Government doesn’t make only statements but works for the welfare of the State and its people. State Government is successfully implementing the Atmanirbhar Bharat programme – a call given by Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi in coordination with Swayampurna Goa. Government has been concentrating to generate skilled manpower and to increase the local agriculture produce Dr Sawant said.
Dr Sawant further informed that in the coming month, every physically disabled person of the State will be provided with required aids – be wheel chair, hearing aid, Jaipuri foot and others. He said Government is working for the welfare of the last citizen of the State irrespective of cast and creed and urged the people to cooperate and support. He appealed to the people not to oppose for the sake of doing oppose. Government is here to listen to every single citizen and said their opinions are most welcomed.
Shri Chandrakant Kavlekar said, as the work of cleaning and desilting of Canal has been taken under MGNREGA, locals will be get employment and farmers will be also benefited. Even in financial crisis Government is working for the betterment of the people, he added.
Shri Filip Neri said, when two Departments come together for any project it shows the way and vision of the Government towards development of its people. Peoples support is always needed to take forward vision and plans of the Government, he pointed.
Shri Clafasio Dias welcomed the step of giving work to local people under MGNREGA.

Total cost of this project under Water Resources Department was Rs. 80 lakhs whereas the total cost of this project under MGNREGA is approximately Rs. 35 lakhs which is centrally funded scheme wherein 90% funds are central funds and 10% funds is State share. State has to provide Rs. 3.50 lakhs saving Rs.76.50 lakhs for State Government. 450 labourers registered under MGNREGA from Sanguem, Quepem and Salcete talukas will be engaged for this work thereby creating 12,500 mandays of work informed in a press release issued by Department of Information and Publicity.
