PANAJI: As part of Sewa Pakhwada, Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant celebrated the spirit of Goa’s artisans and weavers at a programme organized by the Goa Handicraft, Rural & Small Scale Industries Development Corporation in collaboration with the Department of Handicraft, Textile & Coir.
During the event, the Chief Minister highlighted the importance of promoting eco-friendly practices, urging Goans to adopt clay Ganesh idols instead of Plaster of Paris (POP) idols, which are harmful to the environment. “By choosing clay idols, we not only protect our rivers and ecosystems but also support local artisans who have been keeping this tradition alive for generations,” he said.
The programme also featured subsidy disbursement to clay Ganesh artisans, felicitation of senior and leading producers of Ganesh murtis and artifacts, distribution of tool kits under the PM Vishwakarma Yojana, and support to weavers through looms and loan sanction letters.
Dr Sawant further noted that Goa’s rich textile traditions, including the Kunbi saree, shawls, and jackets, are being revived, giving artisans fresh opportunities while preserving cultural heritage.
He reaffirmed that the Goa Handicraft Corporation remains committed to the vision of a Swayampurna Goa by empowering and uplifting local artisans and weavers.
The Chief Minister’s call comes ahead of the festive season, encouraging citizens to make choices that are environmentally responsible and culturally meaningful.
