PANAJI: Chief Minister Pramod Sawant has cautioned Goan residents to ensure proper verification of their tenants, warning that failure to do so could result in the landlords being held accountable if their tenants are involved in criminal activities.
Speaking during the Assembly discussion on budgetary demands for the Home, Police, Jails, and Prosecution departments, Sawant stressed that tenant verification plays a key role in helping law enforcement track down criminals. He said unverified tenants pose a risk to public safety and that responsibility will lie with property owners in such cases.
The Opposition, meanwhile, came down heavily on the government, criticizing its poor conviction rate and questioning the police department’s overall performance. MLAs Yuri Alemao, Venzy Viegas, Vijai Sardesai, and Viresh Borkar accused the police of failing to effectively tackle crime and also raised concerns about unprofessional behaviour at police stations.
Leader of the Opposition Yuri Alemao proposed the creation of a real-time performance dashboard for the police to monitor patrol coverage, FIR registrations, narcotics seizures, and allow for citizen feedback. He also called for quarterly public reports on police response times and complaint handling to improve transparency and accountability.
Alemao further slammed the Anti-Corruption Branch for its inaction and selective approach in handling complaints, and demanded the launch of an online platform for filing e-FIRs and zero FIRs, complete with automatic acknowledgment.
